Welcome to the CSA summer newsletter. If you can drag yourselves away from this delightful weather, we have lots of good things for you to read and some excellent events for you to consider.

The newsletter has not appeared for some time; this is because we have been extremely busy here at CSA. Firstly, our accredited supervision programmes are now running internationally and we completed the first programme in France, in June. This was a very successful course and we have enjoyed training the students in Avignon and working with our staff there. This month sees the start of our first programme in Singapore and the second programme in Sydney. In September, the supervision programme in the US begins in Seattle; we are honoured to be the first company to train supervisors in the US and look forward very much to working with our students there.

As you can imagine, all of these courses have taken an enormous amount of time to establish and we are delighted that they are now going forward. In addition, we have been getting CSA supervision book ready for publication; ‘Full Spectrum Supervision’ will be ‘on the shelves’ in September! It will be available through Amazon and will also be published on Kindle. We’re very excited about this book and believe that it is an excellent addition to the current literature on coaching supervision. It is an exploration of the use of CSA’s Full Spectrum Model (FSM) of supervision and as such, is full of new insights, tips, guidance and original exercises. Each chapter works through the lens of the FSM and uses a case study approach to illustrate a wide range of themes relevant to coaches, mentors, supervisors, HR personnel, leaders and educators – a practical and varied read that will be of use to any professional who is engaged in important business or professional conversations.

Reflection and Continuous Learning in Coaching

As coaches, we actively encourage our clients to reflect on their coaching journey and learning, and it is essential that we do the same and more for ourselves. The coach will only grow when they use their experiences, respond to the experiential information seeking insight and learning, and then in turn respond to the learning to change, develop and grow.

So, what does it mean to reflect?

There are a number of ways of reflecting on coaching practice. On a basic level, we learn from something that doesn’t work, or when something goes wrong. From this, we consider a different method and do something different the next time.
Beyond this, we reflect in order to understand, taking time to reflect back on our words, actions and coaching competence, considering their impact and deciding which aspects are helpful and which are not, to seek the best method of responding in future.

A further step is to reflect analytically on why something happened, what part we as the coach played, what came from the client and anything else that had an influence on the situation. This last step takes a coach beyond the situation, to who they are in the coaching session and the influence they have had on it. This can mean examining beliefs, attitudes and values and their impact on behaviour in coaching. This may happen after the coaching experience or even during the session in real time.

How do we reflect?

There are many models and methods of reflecting both on and in practice. An important note to make here is that, as individuals, our preferences will differ and may change as we develop. Some of our options are:
• Reviewing practice through evaluative questionnaires
• Replaying/analysing recordings of sessions
• Session observation and feedback with reflection
• Reflective journaling and reflective learning logs
• Reflecting within one to one supervision or group/peer supervision
• ‘In the moment’ session reflection and response

Broadly, reflective practice can be self-led and/or supported, and will include a combination of facts, observations, actions, feelings and thoughts. What we do with this information is collate it, analyse it, question it, and make decisions about our response. By asking ourselves some simple questions before and after a coaching session, a coach can raise their self-awareness, consider options and approaches and their impact, and learn through revisiting the experience. Reflection during a session requires more skill and practice to stay focused on the client while paying attention to the other influences and the self in real time.

Reflecting Before coaching – take time before a session to reflect and consider your coaching practice and how previous coaching sessions have gone.

• How am I today?
• What might influence my coaching?
• What coaching outcome is needed for this session?
• Who am I coaching and what might I anticipate?
• How will I be flexible to the client’s needs?
• What is my coaching approach?
• How can I prepare?

Reflecting After coaching – taking time after a session, to reflect on coaching and the experience.

• What happened in the session?
• What did the client need from me as a coach?
• What did I see?
• What did I hear?
• What assumptions did I make?
• How well did I use my coaching competencies?
• What worked well and what was not successful?
• How might I have approach the session for a better outcome?

Reflecting During coaching – consciously paying attention to a variety of information from the client, self and the situation and using this information to shape the approach for the session as it is happening.

• What am I seeing and hearing?
• What else is there?
• How am I responding and reacting to information?
• What is the client experiencing?
• What is my energy like in this moment?
• What am I feeling?
• How do I use this information?
• What do I need to ask?
• What else is here?

Challenge yourself to review how you learn and reflect, and above all, enjoy the wisdom that comes, from continuing to know you.

Reflective Advantage: How to get the best out of coaching supervision

This unique programme deals with one of the most important aspects of professional coaching – making sure that supervision works for you, for your organisation and ultimately your clients.

There are several programmes that train coaches to become supervisors, however this programme looks at the relationship from the supervisee’s perspective – as a customer of supervision.

The programme will appeal to both practicing coaches as well as to those who have responsibility for the way in which coaching contributes to organisational performance and development.

It provides 3 half-day sessions with experienced supervisors and trainers and gives 12 hours of certified CPD.
What will I (or my organisation) get from the programme?

Accelerated development

Our experience is that quality supervision enables a coach to develop much more rapidly and to feel confident that they are practicing ethically and effectively and also paying appropriate attention to their own well-being. It has the potential to increase the value that coachees receive from coaching which in turn enhances their reputation in the market place.

Professional recognition

Those who procure coaching are becoming increasingly aware of the need to assure themselves of the professionalism of the coach. Being able to demonstrate that you are in a high quality supervision relationship will be a significant factor. Indeed, if you are a member of one of the main professional bodies you have signed up to their ‘Code of Ethics and Good Practice’ where a coach is required to be ‘in supervision’.

Working with the right supervisor for you

We believe that coaching without the support of high quality supervision puts you and your coachee at potential risk. This programme will equip you to be a confident and effective supervisee and to be ready to make the most of the opportunities available from supervision. You will be resourced with checklists of best practice, tips and pointers that you can use to assess the best coach supervisor in the marketplace for you.

Programme structure and design

The programme consists of three half day modules, with some Groundwork between the modules to build on learning to ensure that momentum is maintained. The modules are:

Chemistry and contracting

  • Understanding your own preferences and needs
  • Describing the supervisor that you are seeking
  • Being ready to select your supervisor
  • Between this module and the next you will have a supervision session with whomever you choose as your supervisor.

Are you on track?

  • Reviewing your supervision session and harvesting the learning
  • Considering the return on investment in supervision
  • Working out how to manage the relationship with your supervisor
  • Taking stock of progress and influencing future direction

The Tutors

The programme is run by three experienced coach supervisors, Peter Blackeby, Catherine Doherty and Jill Savage who will navigate you through the coaching supervision industry to find the right supervisor for you and build your coaching capability to the delight of your clients.

You may already know where to find a supervisor – but if not then we have a directory of qualified supervisors who would be happy to be considered. At the end of each module there are a small number of supervision sessions available with Peter, Catherine or Jill that you can book separately.

and will cost £190 plus VAT per module. (£570-00 plus VAT in total)

There are two bursary places available for the reduced cost of £150 plus VAT per module. (£450-00 plus VAT in total)

Workshop in Edinburgh For Supervisors

This workshop will be run by the Scotland Group of the Association of Coaching Supervisors and facilitated by one  of CSA’s Graduates.  This workshop will be great for people in the north of the UK and will be a helpful CPD opportunity for CSA grads/community members in the north of England, not just Scotland.

Creative Writing For Reflective & Transformational Supervision Master Class

For those of you who were able to attend the half day master class held by CSA in April this year on creative writing,  run by Jackee Holder, you will know what a fab workshop it was. By popular demand Jackee is running another workshop on creative writing and transformational supervision.  Here is what Jackee has written about this workshop.

Writing is a creative and intuitive method to gain professional and personal insight into your coaching and supervision. When engaged with creatively, writing is a powerful and reflective tool for mindfulness and for connecting with your inner coach and inner supervisor. This one-day master class introduces the techniques of therapeutic and expressive writing along with creative and techniques for reflective practice to gain insights into our work and self, which will enhance physical, emotional and relational well-being.

You’ll be introduced to the benefits and therapeutic qualities of writing and to a series of creative writing practices and creative techniques that will enable you to reflect on your coaching and supervision in a range of creative and innovative ways. You will engage in a series of creative writing exercises, which will also provide content and material for topics and areas of specialism that you want to publish and share with others from your practice as a coach or coach supervisor. Your generated writing content through our day can be revised and edited as content for book proposals, articles, blogs and other written formats for communicating your message with others.

Many of the experiential creative writing exercises you’ll be introduced to can be adapted for use with your one to one coaching and supervision clients or can be applied for your own personal and professional development as a coach or coach supervisor, therapist or counselor, educator or health professional.

The writing practices on the day will be hand written and supported with a workbook, which can be worked through at your own pace at a later date. This is a highly practical and experiential Master class which draws from research form the areas of therapeutic and expressive writing so come prepared with a notebook, your favourite pen or writing instrument and an open mind.

The workshop is based on research documented in Jackee’s latest book: 49 Ways To Write Yourself Well: The Science and Wisdom of Writing and Journaling

This Master class is ideal for: Coach supervisors, coaches, therapists and counselors, educators, health professionals and professionals working in HR, people management and the helping professions.

You will learn and practice:
Creative and innovative ways to reflect and engage wholeheartedly with your practice, deepen your engagement and connection with your work and improve wholeheartedly the quality of your delivery and implementation through a mindfulness approach and well informed creative writing practices for personal and professional development and self reflection. You’ll learn how to use creative writing to gain insights into complex and challenging supervision and coaching issues from your work life. You will gain knowledge about key research, which shows how creative and intuitive writing heals both mind, body and spirit.
