ICF and Coaching Supervision

The much-awaited ICF statement is here in full for you to digest. CSA is delighted that ICF has so fully endorsed the practice of coaching supervision and has clearly delineated it from coach mentoring.  This shift recognises the considerable value of supervision for coaches at all levels. Many CSA graduates have contributed to the conversation at ICF and have strongly supported the document below.  We continue to be involved in ICF’s on-going discussions and our graduates will contribute to forthcoming ICF teleforums on coaching supervision. EMCC Accreditation.

We are delighted that CSA’s Diploma in Coaching Supervision has been awarded the European Mentoring and Coaching Council’s European Supervision Quality Award – (ESQA). This programme, now in its 7th successful year, is one of the most accredited international coaching supervision programmes – accredited by both ICF and EMCC.  CSA has trained over 150 graduates, with new courses planned for France, Sydney and the US in the near future – see dates below. These accreditations give assurances to those who are looking for a first class, richly staffed training in coaching supervision and to those who are looking for well-qualified coaching supervisors.

This article describes key differences between mentor coaching and coaching supervision with the aim of helping coaches and organization buyers of coaching distinguish between these two important functions.  If coaching is to become a fully developed helping profession, both will be necessary. They are not, however, synonyms for the same work.

The Tapestry of Art and Science

For years, coaching has emphasised tools, techniques, competencies, and models. Coaching schools, universities, and consultancies stress these elements because they’re essential to develop as coaches. They provide a firm foundation for continued growth and a thread of consistency across the discipline. We might call this approach the “science of coaching”. Could we enhance the impact of coaching by adding artistry to coaching?

If competency is the language of the “head”, art is the language of the heart; some might even say the soul. Art “moves us”; it touches us. Great art evokes feelings or emotions in us. Feelings are the language of the soul and have great power. We all have known artists whose artistry draws people to them like a magnet. They speak to our heart.

Article:  Coaching Supervision – What is it?

I have been involved in training coach supervisors internationally, for seven years. In this article I want to outline the key functions and benefits of coaching supervision, highlight some of the main features of supervision training, and indicate how to choose a coach supervisor. While coaching supervision uses some models from related disciplines, it is important to distinguish coaching supervision from educational, clinical and managerial supervision. Coaching supervision is a distinct practice and has developed in consultation with many coaches; it continues to embrace new learning and methodology, and to be in dialogue with coaches, coach trainers and employers of coaches.

What coaching supervision does.

‘When a supervisee comes to supervision, both people will be changed by the relationship and the conversation that happens between them……(sup) is a place for everyone in the system to be thought about or held in mind. It is a place to have deep conversations; it is a place to think creatively with a joined heart/mind perspective.’ Joan Wilmot (1)

An Organic Framework  for Enabling  Inspired Coaching Conversations…

I qualified as an Executive Coach with The OCM in 2006; going on to qualify as a Coach Supervisor with the Coaching Supervision Academy in 2009, and become accredited as an EMCC Master Practitioner in 2010. But my journey has never been about external labels but about finding a definition of coaching and a framework for coaching which expressed me, who I am and what I want my practice to offer my clients.

My wake up call came in 2008 when I was finally challenged by my supervisor who said “.. and so Elaine .. what is your model of practice? ” ..

Looking around I found that my library yielded some clues but not the whole picture.

And so I realised I needed to get out of my head and into my heart with what inspired and motivated me……. click here to read on
